Create a First Impression that Lasts

First impression matters.. that we all know... so if you are clueless like me on personal grooming... read on...

As you may know.. I volunteer with CDAC contributing to its blog.. the below is an entry first posted on CDAC blog.. thanks to Lionel Lim!...
But unfortunately as a policy... the administrator has taken out information about Lionel.. Feeling quite bad about it.. I decided to re-post it here...

Like it or not, first impression counts. Studies have shown it may take as little as seven seconds for people to form an opinion of you. The good news for most of us is that it is not so much about looks, but personal grooming and how we carry ourselves.

I caught up with Lionel Lim - a certified style coach cum image consultant, personal trainer, sports nutritionist and published author, and asked him for tips on how to look good. Lionel was invited to appear on Mediacorp TV recently as a celebrity guest and is a regular judge in both local and international beauty pageants.

How important is grooming?
Lionel: Grooming ourselves is just like wearing clothes before we leave the house. If we don’t wear clothes, we feel naked. In the same way, if we don’t groom ourselves, we feel incomplete. If I were to define grooming, it would mean looking presentable and feeling comfortable within the accepted social norms.

Is grooming very much different for males and females?
Lionel: Well, if you ask me, although males and females are different biologically, but when it comes to grooming, there’s nothing much to separate both genders as it really boils down to how well you know yourself.

Can you give us 3 tips in terms of grooming ourselves?
Lionel: My first tip is to advise readers to start a proper skincare routine, if you don’t have one. This means using a cleanser, toner and moisturizer twice daily. I know of many people who are still using soap to wash their face. Never use soap to wash your face as your face is slightly acidic with a ph of 5.5. Soaps strip away the natural moisturizing factors in your skin. And even if you have oily skin, you still need to moisturize your skin. Just make sure you choose a serum moisturizer that normally comes with a pump.

Second, it is best to stick to colours that flatter your skintone. Wear the right colours and you will look younger, more energetic and professional. Wear the wrong colours and you will look the direct opposite – tired, old and sickly.

Third, I must emphasise on the posture, whether it is standing, sitting or squatting. Many people I have observed like to slouch and this does not give you a good impression in the eyes of others. In fact, people will think you are just lazy. And besides being taken as lazy, you may also have lots of body problems later in life such as back pain, shoulder aches, weak knees etc.

What happens during your grooming workshops?

Lionel: I call my grooming workshops ‘The Visual Art of Looking Good’. As the name suggests, it’s all about helping participants up their image quotient so that they will leave feeling more confident.

The training and knowledge I share with my participants is based on the concept of lifelong learning. I teach them sustainable skills which they can put into use immediately and even share with their family and friends.
